Movie tonight – Life of Pi

Ah, Life of Pi, my first 3D movie of the modern era, since I saw a re-run of 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon in the mid-1980s. And tonight at the Rivoli, Camberwell, I was shocked at the visual depth, the stunning effect of the 3D, and the difference it makes to the narrative of a film in which basically … um, not much happens. Another Seinfeld, another Cast Away. But now Wilson is a tiger and it almost talks. My pick of the scenes? When Pi is swept overboard and, underwater, weightless as if in space, witnesses the sinking of the freighter in the depths of the ocean. You’ll see it in this trailer. Titanic could not have done better.
